Read the passage and answer the three questions that follow.

Schools often face difficult decisions when planning lunch menus. A meal must provide enough nutrition, fit within a limited budget, and be practical for kitchen staff to prepare in large quantities. At the same time, students are more likely to eat food they enjoy, so taste and familiarity also matter.

Some schools allow students to choose between two or more main dishes. Supporters of this approach argue that offering choices can reduce the amount of food left uneaten because students can select an option they prefer. However, more choice can also make meal planning more complicated. Kitchens may need to predict how many students will choose each dish, and mistakes can lead either to shortages or to extra food being wasted.

Another issue is whether menus should introduce unfamiliar foods. Schools can use lunch as an opportunity to expose students to new ingredients or dishes from different cultures. Yet if too many unfamiliar items are introduced at once, students may reject them. Some schools therefore combine familiar foods with smaller portions of new dishes, allowing students to try something different without making the whole meal unfamiliar.

Cost also affects what can be served. Fresh ingredients may be attractive, but prices can change with the season. A menu that is affordable in one month may become expensive later. For this reason, successful lunch programs often adjust menus rather than keeping the same dishes throughout the year.

There is no single menu that will satisfy every student. A practical school lunch program must balance nutrition, cost, kitchen capacity, and student preferences. Giving students some choice can be useful, but the system works best when the number of options remains manageable for the school.

解説

(1)

offering choices can reduce the amount of food left uneaten

may reduce the amount of food that is not eaten

は、本文の can reduce the amount of food left uneaten を自然に言い換えたものです。

したがって、A(TRUE)です。

(2)

unfamiliar foods increase the total cost

prices can change with the season

したがって、C(CANNOT SAY)です。

(3)

prices can change with the season.

A menu that is affordable in one month may become expensive later.

successful lunch programs often adjust menus rather than keeping the same dishes throughout the year.

したがって、A(TRUE)です。

always
